My first recommendation is to stay far away from neon colors and pinstripes. These colors and patterns don’t photograph well. It may be one of your favorite pieces of clothing but save it for a fun night out and select something else to take pictures in.
My second tip surprises some of my clients. I say, don’t match, coordinate. Pinterest is full of ideas. I love for clients to send me options on what they are wearing so I can offer suggestions and plan where the outfits will work best at the location. When I am able to work together closely with my clients, the overall photo shoot tends to go more seamlessly.
I also recommend not wearing anything too tight or too short. These outfits restrict movement and limit the poses we can do. Make sure you take the location into consideration when choosing your outfit. It is probably a bad idea to wear heels if we are shooting at a woody/rocky location. I want to make sure you get the best pictures possible but in order to do that, I want you to be safe and comfortable as well.
Fourth, I want to comment on a big hiccup I have seen during a photo session. While new outfits sometimes add to the excitement of getting your photos taken, I do have a caution about taking the tags off right before your photo session. While I think it is fine to shop for a new outfit, I do recommend that you wear it a couple of times before you take photos in order to prepare for any potential wardrobe malfunctions. Maybe there is a slit that is too high or neckline that is too low. Wearing the outfit beforehand will help you know how to make adjustments in order to make it perfect for photos.
My final tip is about jewelry. I’m into jewelry as much as the next person but less is more, in my opinion. If you select something that dangles or that must be perfectly placed in order to go with your outfit, be prepared to keep righting where the clasp hangs.
Selecting an outfit for your engagement session can be difficult but by keeping these recommendations in mind, hopefully you can pick wardrobe items that you love, are comfortable in and that photograph well!
