After more than seven years together, Jessica and Jacob reached out to me about photographing their engagement session at Bernheim State Forest in Kentucky. A Bernheim Forest engagement session felt especially meaningful for them because Jacob has a family member memorialized there. When Jessica shared that with me during our first conversation, it was clear how intentional this session was going to be. They didn’t just want beautiful Kentucky engagement photos. They wanted something personal and connected to their story.

Their story includes a perfectly executed surprise proposal in Breckenridge, Colorado, which Jessica still talks about with the biggest smile. After years of growing together and building a life side by side, documenting this season at Bernheim Forest felt like the perfect way to celebrate everything they’ve experienced together so far.

Bernheim State Forest is one of my favorite locations for engagement photos in Kentucky. The wooded trails, open fields, and natural light filtering through the trees create such a timeless backdrop. It gives couples space to relax, move naturally, and truly be themselves in front of the camera.

From the moment we started shooting, it was obvious how connected they are. I photograph a lot of couples who are comfortable together, but Jessica and Jacob move in sync. They laugh easily, lean into each other naturally, and don’t overthink a thing. Jessica mentioned she might need posing guidance, but the truth is, their natural interaction created the best moments. My job during their Bernheim Forest engagement session was simply to document what was already there.

They chose casual outfits that fit their personalities perfectly. Nothing forced, nothing overdone. Just the two of them walking through Bernheim State Forest, smiling at each other like best friends. Every image felt effortless because their relationship is.

The only thing missing from the session was their two dogs. Other than that, they are completely at home with each other. I’m so glad I was able to document this chapter for them with engagement photos at Bernheim Forest, preserving memories in a place that holds so much meaning in their story.
