welcome to my journal
If you’re looking for a wedding venue that feels like a destination without leaving Kentucky, Castle & Key is worth a closer look.

Located just outside Frankfort near Lexington, Kentucky, Castle & Key combines historic architecture, beautiful gardens, and sprawling grounds to create one of the most unique wedding venues in the state. From the moment you arrive, it’s easy to see why couples are drawn to it. The property feels both elegant and approachable, offering a wedding experience that is distinctly Kentucky while still feeling unlike anywhere else.
Hi! I’m Lauren the photographer behind Photography & Design By Lauren. As a Kentucky wedding photographer, one of the things I appreciate most about Castle & Key is how much variety the property offers. Nearly every direction provides a different backdrop, which means couples can create an incredibly diverse gallery without ever leaving the venue.
Castle & Key is not your typical Kentucky wedding venue.
The property was originally built as a distillery in the late 1800s and has since been restored into one of the most recognizable destinations in Kentucky. The combination of historic stone architecture, manicured gardens, and rolling countryside creates a setting that feels both grand and welcoming.
Unlike many venues that require extensive décor to transform the space, Castle & Key already has so much character built into the property. Couples can keep their design simple and still create a wedding that feels elevated and intentional.

One of the biggest draws of a Castle & Key wedding is the outdoor ceremony experience.
The ceremony lawn provides beautiful views of the property and allows the surrounding architecture and landscape to become part of the celebration. The gardens and mature trees help create a natural backdrop while still maintaining an elegant atmosphere.
Because the property is so expansive, ceremonies feel private even when guests are gathered nearby.

The Shooking Building serves as Castle & Key’s primary reception space and offers a completely different feel from the gardens and outdoor ceremony areas.
Originally part of the historic distillery property, the building combines industrial character with modern event amenities. The exposed brick, large windows, and historic details help maintain the property’s unique atmosphere while still providing a comfortable space for dinner and dancing.
One of the things I like most about the Shooking Building is how well it complements the rest of the venue. Couples can exchange vows surrounded by gardens and historic architecture, then move indoors without losing the character that drew them to Castle & Key in the first place.
The space works especially well for couples who want a wedding that feels elegant but not overly formal. It has plenty of personality on its own, which means you don’t have to overdecorate to create a beautiful reception.
As the evening progresses, the warm lighting and historic details create a welcoming atmosphere for toasts, first dances, and celebrating with family and friends.

One of the strongest features of Castle & Key is the number of portrait locations available within walking distance.
The stone architecture immediately creates a timeless and romantic backdrop. Whether you’re planning a classic wedding or something more modern, the castle itself photographs beautifully.

The gardens are one of the most recognizable parts of the property. They provide color, texture, and a softer look that balances the dramatic stone architecture.

The historic distillery buildings add a distinctly Kentucky feel to wedding portraits. It’s a great option for couples who want a venue that reflects the state’s heritage.

Throughout the property you’ll find quiet corners, winding pathways, and ivy-covered stonework that create beautiful portrait opportunities without requiring much walking.

Many couples are looking for a venue that feels special the moment guests arrive.
Castle & Key offers that experience naturally.
It combines:
It’s a venue that feels memorable without requiring couples to overcomplicate their wedding day.
A few things I would recommend keeping in mind:
The venue already provides so much character that couples can focus more on their experience and less on transforming the space.
