Jessica & Kyle’s Spring Engagement Session

Jessica and Kyle live in Noblesville and chose nearby Coxhall Gardens for their engagement photos. We met there in May, and while it was technically still spring, Indiana had already decided to give us a pretty hot evening.

Coxhall Gardens has a lot packed into one location, which makes it easy to get a good mix of photos without spending the session driving from place to place.

From Huber’s to Their Wedding at Huber’s

Before we get into their engagement photos, Jessica and Kyle’s story has a connection to another Southern Indiana location I know very well.

They met through mutual friends and consider the day they met their first date. That day happened to be at Huber’s, which makes it especially fitting that they’re now planning their wedding there.

They officially started dating in March 2023, and Kyle, who loves numerology, deliberately waited until 3/3/23 to ask Jessica to be his girlfriend.

A couple of years later, they had just found out their offer on a house had been accepted when Kyle proposed. Jessica had gone back to her apartment separately, and shortly after she got home, Kyle walked through the door carrying a dozen roses and playing “Joy of My Life” by Chris Stapleton. Jessica wasn’t expecting a proposal that night, especially since they had just bought a house together.

Engagement Photos at Coxhall Gardens

Jessica told me before their session that she wanted their engagement photos to feel relaxed and didn’t want to look stiff or overly posed. Like a lot of couples, it took a little time for Jessica and Kyle to warm up to being in front of the camera, but that’s completely normal. An engagement session gives us time to figure out what feels comfortable before the wedding day, and there’s no expectation that you should immediately know what to do when someone points a camera at you.

We moved around Coxhall Gardens throughout the evening, using the historic house, pond and some of the architectural features around the property. Having several different areas within walking distance gave us plenty of variety without needing to leave the gardens.

It was also an incredibly busy evening at the park. There were photographers everywhere, so part of the session was simply working around everyone else, watching for areas to open up and finding angles that didn’t have another photo session happening in the background. Popular engagement locations are popular for a reason, but knowing how to work around a crowd can make a big difference.

By the end of the evening, Jessica and Kyle had settled into being in front of the camera and we had a good mix of photos from around the gardens. Now the next time I photograph them will be back at Huber’s, where their relationship started and where they’ll be getting married.
