Maybe it’s dinner with your favorite people gathered around one long table. Maybe it’s exchanging vows in a garden surrounded by the people who have supported your relationship from the beginning. Or maybe it’s simply having enough time to hug every guest instead of feeling like you’re rushing from one conversation to the next.
Small weddings have become increasingly popular over the last few years, and after photographing more than 300 weddings throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana, I completely understand why.
A smaller guest list often means you can invest more into the things that matter most to you, whether that’s an incredible venue, amazing food, beautiful flowers, or simply creating an experience that feels relaxed and personal.
The biggest challenge, though, is finding a venue that fits a smaller celebration.
Some venues are designed for 300 guests. While they can certainly host a wedding with 50 or 75 people, they sometimes feel too large. The best intimate wedding venues are the ones where your celebration still feels full of life, your guests naturally spend time together, and the venue itself becomes part of the experience.
Every venue in this guide is somewhere I’ve personally photographed. These recommendations come from spending time at each property, seeing how wedding days unfold, and helping couples create a celebration that feels true to them.

Whitehall
If someone asked me where they should start their venue search for an intimate garden wedding in Louisville, Whitehall would almost always be one of my first recommendations.
There’s something about Whitehall that simply feels timeless. The historic mansion, formal gardens, mature trees, and elegant architecture all work together to create a wedding day that feels refined.
One of the things I appreciate most is that Whitehall doesn’t need much decoration. The property has so much natural beauty that it already feels complete. Whether your style is black tie, classic, or an elegant garden party, the venue becomes part of your design instead of just the place where it happens.
As a wedding photographer, I never feel like I’m searching for a good location here. We can step onto the front porch, walk down a garden path, photograph in front of the mansion, or wait until sunset when the light begins filtering through the trees. Every part of the property offers something a little different, which means your gallery has plenty of variety without ever leaving the venue.
I also love the getting ready rooms upstairs in the mansion. They’re spacious, filled with natural light, and full of historic details that make even the quieter parts of the day feel special. Between the fireplace, antique furniture, and beautiful windows, it’s one of my favorite places in Louisville to photograph bridal preparations.
Whitehall is also one of the easiest venues to navigate. Parking is close, guests don’t have to walk far between events, and the ceremony, cocktail hour, portraits, and reception all flow naturally together.

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens
If Whitehall feels like a formal estate, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens feels like an adventure.
Every time I photograph a wedding here, I end up discovering another path, another garden, or another corner of the property that would make a beautiful portrait location. It’s one of the few venues where I genuinely never worry about running out of ideas.
Yew Dell is perfect for couples who want to feel surrounded by nature.
Rather than formal gardens, you’ll find winding pathways, towering trees, seasonal flowers, and landscapes that change beautifully throughout the year. It’s a venue where guests naturally explore the property instead of staying in one place all evening.
The castle is one of my favorite features.
Not only does it give the venue its own personality, but it also creates incredible getting ready photographs. The historic stone walls, leaded windows, and unique architecture give your gallery a completely different feel than what you’ll find almost anywhere else around Louisville.
One thing couples don’t always realize is how much shade there is throughout the property. That makes portrait time much more comfortable during the warmer months while also giving us beautiful, soft light for photographs.
If you’re planning a summer wedding, I do recommend thinking about guest comfort since much of the celebration happens outdoors. Fortunately, there are plenty of shaded areas throughout the gardens, and with a little planning, it’s a wonderful venue throughout the season.
Where Whitehall feels elegant and curated, Yew Dell feels natural and botanical.
Neither is better.
They’re simply different experiences.

Gardencourt
Gardencourt is one of those venues that doesn’t always get as much attention as Whitehall or Yew Dell, but I think it deserves to.
Hidden on the campus of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, it feels like you’ve stumbled across a private estate in the middle of the city. The moment you pull onto the property, the noise of Louisville fades away and you’re surrounded by mature trees, formal gardens, and a beautiful historic mansion.
If you’re looking for a venue that feels elegant without feeling flashy, Gardencourt is a wonderful choice.
One of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings here is because it never feels crowded. The property gives everyone room to breathe, whether guests are mingling during cocktail hour or we’re stepping away for portraits. Even with a smaller guest list, the venue feels full of life without ever feeling overwhelming.
The gardens are beautiful throughout the growing season, and there are plenty of quiet corners for portraits. I love that couples can enjoy a peaceful moment together without leaving the venue or feeling like they’re constantly walking from one location to another.

Pepin Mansion
Some venues are perfect for a wedding day.
Pepin Mansion is perfect for a wedding weekend.
Located in New Albany, Indiana, this beautifully restored Victorian mansion gives couples something that many venues can’t: the chance to slow down and actually enjoy time with the people they’ve invited.
Because it’s also a bed and breakfast, your wedding doesn’t have to begin when hair and makeup starts or end after the last dance. Instead, you can spend the evening before relaxing with family, wake up in the same place you’re getting married, and continue celebrating long after the reception is over.
The mansion itself is full of character. Every room has beautiful woodwork, historic details, and elegant furnishings that make even the simplest photographs feel timeless. I love that there are interesting backgrounds everywhere you look, which means we never have to force a moment or spend time searching for the “perfect” location.
Outside, the wraparound porch and gardens continue that same historic charm.

I don’t think enough couples consider The Peterson-Dumesnil House.
Maybe it’s because Whitehall gets so much attention or because people immediately think of some of Louisville’s larger venues. Whatever the reason, I think this historic home is one of the city’s hidden gems.
The first thing most people notice is the wraparound porch.
It’s welcoming, full of Southern charm, and gives the property a personality that’s completely different from anywhere else on this list.
Inside, the historic home is warm and inviting. Outside, mature trees and beautifully maintained grounds create a peaceful setting that feels surprisingly private for being right in Louisville.
As a photographer, I appreciate how many different looks we can create without ever leaving the property. The porch, gardens, architecture, and open lawn all give your gallery variety while still telling the story of your wedding day.
If you’re planning an intimate wedding, this venue naturally encourages people to slow down. Guests gather on the porch, mingle outside, and enjoy the property instead of spending the entire evening inside a ballroom.

Locust Grove
Locust Grove is one of Louisville’s most recognizable historic homes, but I don’t think enough people realize what a wonderful wedding venue it is.
It may not be the first venue couples think of when they begin searching, but every time I photograph a wedding there, I’m reminded why it’s one of my favorite historic venues in Louisville. The combination of open lawns, mature trees, historic buildings, and peaceful surroundings creates a wedding day that feels relaxed from beginning to end.
One of the things I love most about Locust Grove is that it doesn’t feel overly formal. It’s elegant, but it’s approachable. Guests feel comfortable exploring the property, chatting on the lawn during cocktail hour, and enjoying the slower pace that naturally comes with a smaller wedding.
As a photographer, I appreciate how much variety the grounds offer. The historic home is beautiful, but it isn’t the only backdrop. We can use tree-lined paths, gardens, fences, open fields, and the surrounding landscape to create a gallery that feels diverse while still staying true to the venue.
If you’re looking for a venue with history but don’t necessarily want the formal garden feel of Whitehall or Gardencourt, Locust Grove offers something a little different. Farmington
Farmington is one of Louisville’s hidden gems.
When couples start looking for a garden wedding venue, they often think of Whitehall, Yew Dell, or Gardencourt first. While those venues are all beautiful, I don’t think Farmington gets nearly enough attention. It has lovely gardens, a beautiful historic home, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a wonderful choice for an intimate wedding.
One of the things I appreciate most about Farmington is how naturally the day flows. You can get ready in one of the property’s historic buildings, exchange vows just steps from the gardens, and celebrate your reception under the covered patio without ever feeling like you’re rushing from one location to another.
The getting ready space is another feature I really enjoy. It gives you a comfortable place to spend the morning with your wedding party before the day begins, and because it’s right on the property, there’s no need to build extra travel time into your timeline. Everything happens in one place, making the day feel much more relaxed.
The ceremony garden is one of my favorite parts of the property. It’s a beautiful setting for exchanging vows, and once the ceremony is over, we don’t have to go far to find gorgeous portrait locations. Between the gardens, the historic home, and the mature trees surrounding the property, there’s plenty of variety without ever leaving the venue.
If you’re planning a fall wedding, Farmington is especially beautiful. The historic home paired with the changing leaves creates a timeless backdrop, and the gardens take on a completely different look as the seasons change. It’s one of my favorite times of year to photograph there.
Farmington has a quieter feel than some of Louisville’s more well-known wedding venues. It’s elegant without feeling overly formal, historic without feeling intimidating, and just the right size for couples who want to spend meaningful time with the people they’ve invited.

The Carriage House at the Howard Steamboat Museum
Just across the river in Jeffersonville, The Carriage House at the Howard Steamboat Museum offers one of the most charming historic settings in the Louisville area.
I love recommending this venue to couples who want historic character but don’t necessarily want a large estate or garden venue. The property feels intimate from the moment you arrive, making it especially well suited for smaller guest lists.
One thing I enjoy about photographing here is the variety packed into a relatively small area. Between the carriage house, brick walkways, gardens, and the historic Steamboat Museum, it’s easy to create a wedding gallery that feels rich in history without ever needing to leave the property.
The venue also has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that naturally encourages guests to relax and spend time together. That’s one of the biggest reasons I think it works so well for intimate weddings. Nothing feels oversized or overwhelming.

Duncan Memorial Chapel
Not every intimate wedding takes place in a garden.
If you’ve always dreamed of getting married in a traditional chapel, Duncan Memorial Chapel is one of the most beautiful ceremony locations in Louisville.
The chapel isn’t large, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
With only a handful of pews on each side of the aisle, every guest feels close to the ceremony. It creates an atmosphere where everyone can truly witness your vows instead of feeling like they’re watching from the back of a large church.
The historic architecture is another reason I enjoy photographing here. Exposed wood beams, vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and beautiful chandeliers give the chapel so much character that it doesn’t need much additional décor.
One detail I especially love is the bride’s entrance. She walks through a beautiful wooden doorway before passing beneath another stone arch into the chapel. It’s such a timeless moment and one that photographs beautifully every single time.
Because Duncan Memorial Chapel is primarily a ceremony venue, many couples choose to celebrate their reception somewhere else afterward. Fortunately, there are several wonderful reception venues nearby, making it easy to create a wedding day that feels both traditional and personal.

If you’ve always pictured getting married surrounded by incredible architecture, the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum is one of Louisville’s most unique intimate wedding venues.
Located in the heart of Old Louisville, this beautifully restored Victorian mansion feels like stepping back in time. What I love most about Conrad-Caldwell House is that it offers something completely different from many of the other venues on this list. While Whitehall, Yew Dell, Gardencourt, and Farmington are known for their gardens, Conrad-Caldwell shines because of its incredible interior spaces. If you love historic architecture and want your venue to have as much character inside as it does outside, this is a wonderful option.
One of the biggest advantages of getting married here is the location. The mansion sits on historic St. James Court, one of Louisville’s most recognizable streets. After your ceremony, we can step outside for portraits beneath the tree-lined sidewalks, around the fountains, and among the beautiful Victorian homes that make this neighborhood so iconic. It gives your wedding gallery even more variety without adding extra travel time to your day.
I also like that the venue gives couples several ceremony options depending on the size and feel of their wedding. You can exchange vows on the Grand Staircase for a truly intimate ceremony, or choose the Veranda or St. James Court if you’re planning a larger celebration. The flexibility is nice because you can choose the space that best fits your vision while still enjoying the character of this historic home.

One thing I always encourage couples to think about when considering Conrad-Caldwell House is guest parking. Because the mansion is located on St. James Court, there isn’t a large dedicated parking lot like you’ll find at many traditional wedding venues. If you’re planning a larger wedding, I’d strongly recommend arranging a shuttle service. Having guests park at a nearby hotel or parking lot and shuttling everyone to the venue makes the experience much smoother and allows everyone to simply enjoy the day instead of worrying about finding street parking.

Planning a Small Wedding?
One of my favorite things about intimate weddings is that they create space for the moments couples remember most.
Instead of spending the day trying to greet hundreds of guests, you have time to sit with your grandparents during dinner, laugh with your best friends during cocktail hour, and actually enjoy being married before the day is over.
The venue you choose plays a big part in creating that experience.
